International Women's Day: Jay Francois-Campbell
Tuesday, March 8, 2016
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’ve spoken to some female crafters to find out what inspires them
In my teens, I would often visit the Victoria and Albert Museum. During this time, I was studying science and helped my parents making clothes for clients.
One day, walking around the museum, I found myself admiring the same garment exhibit as an American woman. We were soon deep in conversation. It transpired she was a Hollywood costume designer. Having told her a little about myself, she urged me to investigate making costumes on a grand scale.
It never occurred to me the skills I had acquired could be used to fuel one of my passions; film.
I never knew her name. If it wasn’t for her, I would not have followed the path of magic that clothing inspires around the world.
Jay’s first book, Simple Tailoring and Alterations (GMC, £14.99), is released on 7th May.
