Clair gets her hands on the very handy Dremel® 3000, their latest multitool, and a perfect addition to any workroom. By Clair Wolfe
The Dremel 3000-1/25 boasts a multitude of features, and has been designed to be a step up from the Dremel 300 series of tools. It has increased power, less vibration, a soft grip handle, and most importantly, the innovative EZ Twist™ Nose Cap function. With this new feature there is no need for a wrench to tighten and loosen the collet when changing accessories; the wrench mechanism is integrated in the nose cap of the tool. The tool offers the user a comfortable grip with its convenient lightweight housing.
The Dremel has a variable speed control of between 10,000 and 33,000 rpm. It has an integrated hanging hook, perfect for hanging the tool on a 'tool holder', allowing for the flex shaft to be used correctly. Also included in the package is a kit of 25 high-quality Dremel accessories, the high-quality Flex Shaft, an informative DVD, the instruction manual and a sturdy storage case.
What does it do?
This is an ideal tool for users that like to carry out detailed tasks, such as cutting, sanding and engraving, and so is perfect in the jewellery maker's workroom. It does all the tasks that many of its predecessors have done, only better!
What is included?
This kit includes the Dremel 3000 multitool, the high-quality Flex Shaft (a flexible arm) and 25 genuine Dremel accessories, including EZ SpeedClic™ (a quick-change system). It is all packed in a convenient case. This is a high value kit, offering great value for money for the more demanding user.
How good are the instructions?
The instructions are a little confusing, but this may be due to having to flick back and forth between the pictorial and written instructions. However, the website www.dremeleurope.com is incredibly informative and very easy to navigate around. Be warned, you will see other tools and accessories you will want to add to your kit.
What else will you need?
You will need a stand. Dremel produce two options, the Workstation and the Flex Shaft tool holder.
How easy is it to use?
It is very easy to use, once it is set up. Like all tools, care should be taken when using the kit and a good pair of safety goggles is a must. Read the instructions and familiarise yourself with the items in the package before starting.
Can it be added to?
Dremel produce a large range of accessories to complement this kit, and although you may not need to buy anything else initially, it won't be long before you find something you would like to add to your package.
I very much liked the EZ Twist Nose Cap,
which is great for swapping the bits quickly and easily, and
perfect for anyone who is doing two or three projects at once. It's
the first time I have used a Flex Shaft and this is a godsend. The
multitool itself can be a little heavy, especially when working for
long periods, but the Flex Shaft solves this problem and also gives
the user more control in their work.
I have owned several multitools and this is the best one yet. The Dremel 3000 will be saved for my workroom, while the others are the perfect addition to any household's tool box, as they come in pretty useful for DIY jobs around the home. It is an investment tool, but one that will last for many years and come in handy for many jobs.
