International Women's Day - Madeleine Rogers (Mibo)
Tuesday, March 8, 2016
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’ve spoken to some female crafters to find out what inspires them.
I would say that my mum has given me the most inspiration. I still clearly remember the day I came home from school to find her busy creating a new strange object (which turned out to be a prototype for new kind of plant support) They sold well enough for her to set up her own business and she soon specialised in handmade kitchen accessories which went on to sell in the best cookshops in the country. She showed me that a good idea and some hard work can really allow you to create a business that you can run on your own terms. She kept things small and local yet always somehow managed to successfully compete against larger companies who manufactured overseas.
This photo is of my mum debuting the plant supports at a local fete back in 1981. By the end of the day everyone was walking around holding one! She sold the business a few years ago and the company still produces UK handmade kitchen items to this day.
Madeleine’s latest book, The Sky Guys (£12.99, Button Books), is released on 7th April.
