1. Artesano Definition Sock Yarn

1 Artesano Definition Sock Yarn

Definition Sock yarn is a beautiful sock weight blend of 75% Merino wool and 25% polyamide. This combination of softness and strength has been carefully spun for maximum stitch definition so rather than being limited to just sock knitting this versatile yarn can be used for larger projects too. With a standard 4 ply tension of 28 sts and 36 rows and a metreage of 400m per 100g, one hank is enough for a pair of short socks. There is a choice of 12 delicious colours ranging from classic black and cream to the vibrant Perky and Mushy Peas, shown here. Pattern support can be found in the Definition 1 pattern booklet, which includes 11 designs for socks, shawls and hand warmers using lace, cables and stripes but once you've seen the colour range you'll want to use it for fairisle and intarsia projects too. This is an easy yarn to care for as the Merino content is machine washable. Machine washing at 40˚c is recommended

5. Cashmered 100% Cashmere

5 Cashmered 100 Cashmere

100% Cashmere, as its name suggests, is a luxuriously soft yarn that is spun as 2 x 2/28 strands to give a 3 ply equivalent weight, making it ideal for lightweight hand knits. It has a standard tension of 30 sts and 40 rows on a 3mm needle, which makes it a good choice if you have a preference for the fully-fashioned detailing and shaping of vintage knitting patterns. The company, founded by Moira Williams, prides itself on using only 'Grade A' cashmere with a fibre thickness of 14 microns (that's 14 millionths of a metre) and a fibre length of 34-36mm. In short this means the longer the fibre, the higher the quality as long, fine fibres have a tendency to pill less, maintain shape better and last longer. There's a great choice of 20 colours ranging from pastels such as Harebell, Lilac and Candy Floss to stronger fashion shades like Blackberry, Strawberry and Deep Aqua shown here. Cold hand washing is recommended.

7. Bergere de France Boheme

7 Bergere De France Boheme

Boheme is a highly twisted slub blend of 54% acrylic, 20% cotton, 14% polyamide and 12% polyester. Each of the twisted shades has a white base that creates a mottled colour effect when knitted and the yarn's thick and thin construction means that it has both dense and sheer areas when knitted. This makes it ideal for beginners whose tension may be a little irregular as well more experienced knitters who enjoy working with exciting colour and interesting textural effects. It knits to a standard tension of 17 sts and 25 rows on 4.5mm needles but more lacy effects can be achieved by knitting on larger sized needles. There is a choice of eight shades including classic neutrals like Gravier (Grey) and Biscuit to the zingy citrus tones of shade 24438 Mais shown here. Pattern support can be found in the Mag 166 Spring/Summer Collection and Mag 167 Summer Mag 0-10 years booklets, which are each priced at £6.95. Gentle washing at 30˚c is recommended.
