The summer holidays might be over but while the sun is till shining whip up this Knotted stitch top by Natalie Smart

 

SIZES

To fit bust chest: 81[86:91:97:102:107]cm (32[34:36:38:40:42]in)

Actual measurement: 80[86:96:102:107:112]cm (31.5[34:38:40:42:44]in)

Length: 58[59:60:61:64:65]cm (23[23:23.5:24:25:25.5]in)

Sleeve seam: 8[8:9:9:10:10]cm (3[3:3.5:3.5:4:4]in)

Figures in square brackets refer to larger sizes, where there is only one set of figures this applies to all sizes.

 

YOU WILL NEED

Sublime Extra Fine Merino DK 100% extra fine merino wool(116m per 50g)

7[7:8:8:9:9] x 50g balls in Sunday

1 pair each of 3.75mm and 4mm knitting needles.

A 3.75mm circular needle

3 Stitch holders

A hook and eye for Collar

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

 

TENSION

22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over knotted st patt using 4mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

 

PATTERN NOTES

Rib Pattern

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: P2, (k1tbl, p2) to end.

These 2 rows form rib patt.

 

Knotted St Patt

Rows 1, 3, 5, 9, 11 & 13: Knit.

Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.

Row 7: (K9, Knot 3) to last 9 sts, k9.

Row 15: K3, (Knot 3, k9) to end.

 

ABBREVIATIONS

Knot 3 = insert RH needle p-wise through next 3 sts as if to p3tog, yrn and draw through leaving sts on LH needle, insert RH needle k-wise into same 3 sts yrn and draw through, insert needle p-wise into same 3 sts and p3tog (3 sts on needle).

S2kp1o = slip 2 sts, knit 1 st, pass second slipped st over.

 

BACK

Using 3.75mm needles cast on 83[89:95:101:107:113] sts and work in rib patt for 12cm (5in) ending on a WS row.

Change to 4mm needles and cont in knotted st patt throughout.

Size 1 only: (K4, K2tog) to last 5 sts, k3, k2tog.

Size 2 only: (K9, k2tog) to last st, k1.

Sizes 3 & 5 only: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.

Size 4 only: K3, (k10, k2tog) to last 2 sts k2.

Size 6: K1 (k12, k2tog) to end.

All Sizes: 69[81:93:93:105:105] sts rem.

Work straight until back meas 24[24:24:24:26:26]cm (9.5[9.5:9.5:9.5:10:10]in) ending on a RS row.

Inc 1 st at each end of every foll 4th rows to 93[93:105:105:117:117] sts.

Work straight until back meas 40[40:40:40:42:42]cm (16[16:16:16:16.5:16.5]in) ending on a WS row.

Shape armhole

Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 87[87:99:99:111:111] sts.

Sizes 2, 4, 5 and 6 only: Dec 1 st at each end of next and every alt row to [79:93:95:97] sts, then

dec 1 st at each end of foll 4th row until [75:87:93:93] sts.

Sizes 1 & 3 only: Dec 1 st at each end of every row to 83[87] sts, then dec 1 st at each end of next and every alt row to 69[75] sts.

All sizes

Work without shaping until armhole meas 17.5[18:19:20:21:22]cm (7[7:7.5:8:8.5:9]in) ending on a WS row.

Next row: K51[54:54:66:69:69] sts and place these sts onto a holder, k rem 18[21:21:21:24:24] sts.

Shape shoulders

Cast off 6[7:7:7:8:8] sts at beg of next and every alt row until all 18[21:21:21:24:24] sts have been cast off. With WS facing, leave centre 33[33:33:45:45:45] sts on stitch holder and place remainder 18[21:21:21:24:24] sts from stitch holder onto 4mm needle. Re-join yarn to neck edge and work second side to match the first.

 

FRONT

Work as given for back until work meas 8cm (3in) less than back to start of shoulder shaping, ending on a WS row.

Shape left neck

Next row: K33[36:36:42:45:45] sts, sl1. Place rem sts onto a holder.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, sl1.

Next row: Purl.

Rep last 2 rows until 30[33:33:39:42:42] sts rem.

Work 7 rows without shaping, slipping last st on k rows.

Next row: K to last 2 sts, M1, sl1.

Next row: Purl.

Rep these last 2 rows to 34[37:37:43:46:46] sts.

Work 2 rows without shaping.

Next row: K to last st, sl1. Place last 16[16:16:22:22:22] sts just worked onto a holder. With WS facing, re-join yarn to rem 18[21:21:21:24:24] sts.

Next row: Purl.

Shape shoulder

Cast off 6[7:7:7:8:8] sts at beg of next and every alt row until all 18[21:21:21:24:24] sts have been cast off.

Shape right neck

With RS facing, place 35[38:38:44:47:47] sts back onto left hand 4mm needle and re-join yarn to neck edge.

Next row: K1, skpo, k to end. 34[37:37:43:46:46] sts rem.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: Sk2p1o, k to end.

Rep last 2 rows until 30[33:33:39:42:42] sts rem.

Work 7 rows without shaping, slipping first st on every k row.

Next row: Sl1, M1, k to end.

Next row: Purl.

Rep these last 2 rows to 34[37:37:43:46:46] sts.

Work 2 rows without shaping, slipping first st on every k row.

Next row: Sl1, k15[15:15:21:21:21]. Place these sts just worked onto a holder, k to end. 18[21:21:21:24:24] sts on needle.

Shape shoulder

Cast off 6[7:7:7:8:8] sts at beg of next and every alt row until all 18[21:21:21:24:24] sts have been cast off.

 

SLEEVES

Using 4mm needles, cast on 57[57:69:69:69:69] sts and work in knotted st patt until sleeve meas 8[8:9:9:10:10]cm (3[3:3.5:3.5:4:4]in) ending on a WS row.

Shape top

Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows 51[51:63:63:63:63] sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next 3[3:7:5:3:3] rows 45[45:49:53:57:57] sts and then on alt rows 12[14:12:14:16:18] times. 21[17:25:25:25:21] sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next 4[2:5:5:4:2] rows ending on a p row.

Cast off rem 13[13:15:15:17:17] sts.

 

COLLAR

Press pieces lightly according to ball band and darn in loose yarn ends.

Join shoulder seams.

With RS facing and using a 3.75mm circular needle, sl1, k rem 15[15:15:21:21:21] sts from right front holder, pick up and k4 sts along right front shoulder, pick up and k4 sts along right back shoulder, k33[33:33:45:45:45] sts from back holder, pick up and k4 sts along left back shoulder, pick up and k4 sts along left front shoulder, k15[15:15:21:21:21] sts from left front holder, sl1. 81[81:81:105:105:105] sts, turn.

Next row: P to end, turn.

Next row: Sk2p1o, work in knotted st patt to last 3 sts, k2tog, sl1, turn.

Rep last 2 rows to 75[75:75:99:99:99] sts, ending on a p row.

Cast off.

 

TO FINISH OFF

Pin and sew sleeve heads in place along armhole. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew a hook and eye onto WS of collar where front neck and beg of collar meet before collar shaping.
