Making up

Body

Place two halves of body together matching all edges and join row-ends. Stuff body leaving neck and lower edge open.

Base

Pin base to lower edge of body and sew base to body all the way round, adding more stuffing to base if needed.

Head

Gather round cast-on sts of head, pull tight and secure. Join row-ends of head leaving gap. Stuff, pushing a ball of stuffing into nose, and close gap. Pin head to body adding more stuffing to neck if needed. Sew head in place by taking a small horizontal st from head and then a small horizontal st from body and doing this alternately all the way round.

Hind legs

Join row-ends of each hind leg and with seam at centre of inside edge, join cast-on sts. Stuff and join cast-off sts. Place koala on a flat surface and pin legs to body. Curl legs round body and sew in place.

Arms

Join row-ends of each arm and with seam at centre of inside edge, join cast-on sts. Stuff and join cast-off sts. Attach arms to koala sewing shoulders to neck and with paws sloping down.

Nose

Sew outside edge of nose to head.

Embroidering the features To make eyes, tie a knot in 2 lengths of black yarn winding the yarn round 6 times to make each knot (see below). Check that the knots are the same size. Tie eyes to 4th row above top of nose with 7 clear knitted sts in between. Run ends into head. Work a chain-stitch in black round outside edge of nose. On all paws, embroider 3 toes in black taking three straight sts at ends of paws, beginning and fastening off invisibly. To begin and fasten off for the embroidery, tie a knot in end of yarn and take a big st through work, coming up to start embroidery. Allow knot to disappear through knitting and be caught in stuffing. To fasten off, take a few sts back and forth through work, inserting the needle where yarn comes out.

Ears

With wrong sides facing, place a piece of outside ear and inside ear together, matching all edges. Tuck inside the cast-off sts of outside edge and join outside edges. Join row-ends of lower edge and
sew both ears to head of koala. Finally, cut loops of ears.

Eyes

1 Make a loose single slip knot and then wind the yarn around five more times, making a total of six times. (The diagram below shows the yarn being wound three more times.) Pull the knot tight.

2 You now have an oval-shaped eye. Make 2 and check that the knots are the same size. Tie eyes to head in position as stated in the instructions. Run ends into head.
