St Mungo’s Woolly hat day!

01 January 01

St Mungo's third annual Woolly Hat Day returns Friday 26 October and they are calling on knitters to take up their needles and get involved, so get your hats on for the homeless!

St Mungo's charity works hard to support homeless people and help them rebuild their lives. Its aim this year is to get knitters across the country to whip up 5,678 oftheir distinctive orange bobble hats to be used in a stunt to launch this year's Woolly Hat Day campaign and to be sold on Woolly Hat Day to raise vital funds for St Mungo's. The 5,678 hats represent the number of people who slept rough on the streets of London last year - a 43% increase on 2010/2011 figures, and the number of people sleeping rough continues to grow nationwide.

It couldn't' be easier to get involved. You can download a hat pattern, donated by CalKnits, or buy a kit (including pattern and distinctive orange yarn) supplied by Woolly Madly Deeply from the Woolly Hat Day website. You can even download a free tag to personalise your hat when you are ready to send!

London shop, Loop, are acting as HQ for storing the hats so send yours to:

Celebrity supporters range from soon-to-be hobbit Martin Freeman to comedians Ed Byrne and Alexi Sayle. Frank as ever, Alexei says it best: "Being homeless is about as unfunny as it can get. As human beings it's up to us to help each other out, so put a hat on for St Mungo's Woolly Hat Day, have a laugh and do something to support an important cause."
